SynopsisFor those members who have been with WHCRMS for a while and have “been around the block”, much of what has become routine or just a part of everyday business is new and exciting material for the individual embarking on a health care risk management career.  Through audience participation and a conversational presentation, WHCRMS members will learn about the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to become a risk manager in today’s ever-changing health care environment.  Other lessons include risk financing, claims and litigation management, enterprise risk management, patient safety and quality, and cause analysis.  More than just a presentation, it’s an opportunity for those new to risk management to learn from seasoned leaders in the field and to make important networking connections.

Speakers: Liane McGarvie-Yeager, Director of Risk Management at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Liane has more than 16 years of experience in health care in the areas of risk management, safety and patient relations, and is a past president of the Washington Health Care Risk Management Society.  She is also a member of the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management and currently serves on its Education Development Task Force.  She is accomplished in risk financing, professional liability and other liability claims management, and enterprise risk management.  Her passion is improving the safety for all people who interact within the healthcare environment, while reducing organizational risk and liability.

Karen Markwith, Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Karen is currently the Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Virginia Mason Medical Center and her experience includes National Director of Enterprise Risk Management for large multistate non for profit health system with multistate responsibilities.
